What's the first question to ask?
The choice mainly comes down to one simple question: where is your activity based? If you work in Andorra — as an employee of a local company or as director of your own company — active residency is the route to consider. If you live off your income and investments without carrying out any local activity, passive residency applies, with its mandatory investment in Andorra. If your activity (consulting, sport, art, science) remains focused abroad while based in Andorra, international and sports residency generally fits better.
Each status has its own financial thresholds, minimum presence requirement, and type of deposit (refundable or not) — full details for each are available on its dedicated page above.
Administrative residency and tax residency: two different concepts
Obtaining an Andorran residence card doesn't automatically settle the question of tax residency, which depends on separate criteria — presence of more than 183 days, or centre of economic interests. Both processes need to be considered together, without being confused with one another. See our taxation in Andorra guide.
